TAKE THE LEAK TEST
IS YOUR POOL LEAKING
Before calling in professionals to find the leak in your
pool or spa it pays to do some investigating to determine if it
is in fact leaking.
Evaporation is commonly mistaken for
a leak because no two pools evaporate at the same rate and no
one can give you a figure without testing.
The test for evaporation is simple. Place
a bucket of water on the step of your pool- sitting in the pool
water so it becomes the same temperature. Mark the water level
within the bucket and the pool water level on the outside of the
bucket. This is then left for two days at the most and the water
levels to the marks measured. The measurement from the mark inside
the bucket to the current water level in the bucket is your evaporation.
If the measurement outside the bucket to pool level is greater
than the measurement for evaporation the pool is leaking.
EVAPORATION
TEST
POOL AND
SPA
Once
you have determined that the system is leaking it will also help
to determine if the pool or the spa is leaking, if you have both.
In most systems you can isolate the pool from the spa. Simply
do this and see which is still leaking. If both appear to leak
isolation most likely has failed. It would be advisable to get
a professional to isolate one from the other.
PIPES OR STRUCTURE?
To
determine if the leak is within a pipe or within the pool structure,
carry out the evaporation test twice. Once with the system shut
off, that is, no filter operating. Then once with the system running
for an extended period.
You may end up with one of three possible results:
1 - No difference between tests.
-
Indicates probable structural leak.
2 - Higher loss with system running.
-
Indicates probable pressure pipe leak.
3 - No loss with system running.
- Indicates
probable suction pipe leak.
FURTHER
QUESTIONS?
Please keep in mind these tests are indicators only and
may give false reading. Full leak testing of entire system is
recommended when water loss is suspected.
